A View for the Magazines (Milan)

Milan is one of the many places that every fashion enthusiast wants to visit. From designer stores to custom shops the city of Milan is full of character. One bit of character that cannot be overlooked is the beautiful architecture that graces the streets. One building in particular that I admired was the Duomo where I climbed 237 stairs and gained a life-changing view. This Gothic style masterpiece is one that many come to see and is not for the faint of heart so if you’re afraid of heights, well, bring a buddy. The sights, once you reach the balcony, although beauty is nothing compared to that of the rooftop once reaching the top visitors, must watch their step on the slanted walkways that make for a picture perfect moment. Once reaching the top you are able to see a large portion of Milan and feel a great sense of accomplishment for climbing 237 stairs, and yes we counted.

Like a movie (Poppi)

Although the roads were winding on our way to the destination I found Poppi to be one of my favorite stops on our tour of Italy. Upon arriving in Poppi we were graced by yet another rainy day. At this point in the trip, our group had become well accustomed to the treacherous weather of Italy, so this did not put much of a damper on our adventures. On our first day in Poppi, we were able to enjoy many unique sites such as castles, chapels, and rigorous Hills, many of which we hiked. But weather and sore feet aside the sights of Poppi were unlike any other, The constant thought that crossed my mind was “ Am I on a movie set?” The foggy hills and cobblestone streets are something straight out of a romance novel and the fantasy-like castle add even more to that Ambiance. It is only after you enter these extravagant places do you learn that the stories line up more with that of a war movie. Among the many castles was sawed we were able to learn about Dante and his inspiration as well as learning a few Italian phrases in a lesson in the mists of a small village. This small town, although not very popular with tourist groups is definitely not one I would have wanted to miss. The Locals all are very accommodating and the stories you will hear are enough to inspire any writer. .

Milano: Not the End, Not a New Beginning, But a Point Somewhere In the Middle

I never know what things mean or why they matter until later.  I am still processing my experience. Every day I realize something I didn’t understand a month ago.   Milano was exciting for many.  I thought it was a strange place to end a trip that emphasized being vero.  Every day I was moved to tears by the real beauty, truth, and light in people, art, music, and the world around me. By the time I found myself at that mall, I didn’t want anything money could buy anymore.   I was pretty badly behaved in Milano. I cried for days and didn’t care who saw. I had no intention of getting on the plane. I fought with my roommates over whether or not I could survive the summer alone. In the end– I was just short of physically forced to pack and go. (“You’re my ride home! Pack NOW! We’re leaving!” Plus some colorful language. Madison became a real friend.)   Why did it feel like my heart was being torn out of my chest? First of all, I wasted too much of my life to accept more wasted moments and opportunities. The time to do anything is right now. Also, I disappointed myself by not being the person I wanted to be. I was a coward, worried constantly about nothing, and had regrets. Most importantly: I always said if I went anywhere–I’d never come back.. as if it never mattered where.   Italy became my home. This escalated very, very quickly.   In the end, this was something worth doing right. Running off with no plan at all would not have ended well. (Dropping out of school to get there quicker is not the right decision either. It took weeks beyond my return to fully understand and accept how much time, patience, and hard work this will take.) I would have no resources to fight this uphill battle back to Italy, if it weren’t for specific ways I grew there. I learned so many things I didn’t expect– but mostly how my own stubbornness and overthinking are what keeps shooting me straight in the foot.   I did a long adaptation of Dr. O’Connor’s favorite exercise on the plane. (It was a long freaking flight!) I didn’t think I’d ever post it (or anything about Milano at all) because I didn’t want to write anything negative. Negatives became positives, given proper perspective. The end of the trip wasn’t the end of anything.  It wasn’t even a new beginning, but a point somewhere in the middle.   5 Most Beautiful Sights: Views: Tuscany from castles and towers, Milano from the rooftop of the Duomo, any glance in any direction, anywhere. Uniquely juxtaposed architectural elements- mismatched buildings, cool windows, doors covered with graffiti.. The rainbow flag hanging in the Capital.  (This shocked me. I had mistaken Italy for very conservative.) Boys playing kickball in some part of Venice only locals and lost students see.  Narrow walkways, tiny bridges, hidden...

Liz’s Pictures of Italy

The Coliseum looking up. I thought the angle of it, was so cool. Another picture of the Coliseum, but this time in it’s entirety.   My favorite room the Vatican besides the Sistine Chapel, I was in awe of this room. I swear I have 100 pictures of it alone. One of the Pope’s Guards, in the perfect position for a shot. Michelangelo’s David. He was so beautiful and handsome, I just had to snag one. Of the one’s I took of him, this was my favorite. The ceiling above David with it’s silhouette below. It may be dark but I it’s a favorite for me. A landscape view from the Winery, on that beautiful but rainy day. A view of Venice from the gondola. The ride was so worth it and the gondolier was amazing. A beautiful picture of Venice at night from atop the Rialto Bridge. The Duomo in Milan. A beautiful view of the mountain and water of Lake Como.

Breathtaking views

It was our last full day in Italy and the group had the choice of staying in Milan or going to Lake Como. I chose to go to Lake Como. Our departure there was a little stressful. We all walked to the metro together and rode it to Milano Centrale. In Milano Centrale, we bought train tickets to Varenna. By the time everyone that was going had bought their ticket, it was 8:06 and our train would depart at 8:20. This is where things got a little stressful. We all raced upstairs to look at the departing trains to find our platform. The tickets we buy usually have a train number on them, but since this was one of the local trains, we didn’t have the luxury of figuring it out by train number. We had to look for where each local train would go. Thankfully, we had Dr. Permenter with us because she was the one that was able to find out which train we needed to be on and we all hopped on, just in the nick of time. We were almost at our stop, Varenna, when we were starting to see the Swiss Alps and some of Lake Como. We had finally arrived at our destination and started walking towards the ferry. Once we were close to the ferry, we saw beautiful Lake Como and the Swiss Alps. We stayed in Varenna for a bit doing a little shopping and having photo sessions. Our next stop was Bellagio. When getting off the ferry and into the town, I noticed some steps that lead into the water and told my group that we should sit there for a while, they all agreed. We all sat there enjoying the views and taking our last looks of Italy in. After about an hour or two, we went to a restaurant for some lunch. I had to try their minestrone soup, mostly because I was a little chilly, but it was a must try while in Italy, because they have a yellow broth instead of a brown broth like America does. It had to have been the best soup that I have ever tasted in my life. After lunch, we all decided to move onto our next destination, Como. We had barely made the boat to Como. When we got on, we saw that the entire group was already on the boat. It took about an hour to get to Como from Bellagio. When we arrived, we all decided to find out where the train station was so that we could get our tickets back to Milan. After buying our tickets we went to a park by the Tempio Voltiano. We sat and watched the swans for the last few hours. It was kind of bittersweet at the end of the day because we had seen some breathtaking views of Lake Como from three different towns and it was also our last full day here. We will miss you Italy and we...

Sitting on top of a duomo in Milan

Milan is known for being the city of fashion. However, I do not keep up with fashion and I am definitely not a fashionista. So, instead of looking at the next clothing item to buy, I did a spire walk. It was quite interesting to walk up a spiral staircase with hundred sixty nine steps to get to the edge of the roof of the Duomo di Milano. We had an amazing view of the spires from the moment we walked out of the door of the staircase. I think it was even better that we were able to walk up another seventy one steps to be sitting on top of the roof. The view from up here was absolutely breathtaking! Nothing could have made the city more gorgeous, except maybe the removal of all the construction work being done of the Duomo and the buildings nearby. While I didn’t get to go up in the Duomo di Santa Maria and see the entire city of Florence, I was able to climb the Duomo di Milano and see the entire city of fashion. When in Milan, you should visit the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and spin the balls of Taurus the Bull. Spinning on his balls three times is said to bring one good luck. This has actually created a divot in the floor. Also, if you are able to do one complete spin without touching your other foot to the ground in this very divot, it is said that you will return to Milan one day. I might not have spun around in the divot three times, I was able to do a complete spin on my right foot without my left touching the ground.
