SRU Summer Pre-Session Trip of Italy

*Listed below is the current tentative Itinerary, although it is subject to change.
*2015 itineary is in the works & may be similar, but may vary from the 2012 itinerary.

Rome (Roma) — The Roman Forum where Shakespeare (mistakenly) thought Julius Caesar was murdered, the Colosseum, thePantheon, the Vatican Museums, Trevi Fountain, St. Peter’s Basilica and other sites.

Florence (FIrenze) — The Baptistry where Dante was baptized; the Duomo and Brunelleschi’s Dome; the Uffizi, which houses a concentration of Renaissance artworks by such masters as Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Donatello, and Botticelli; the church of San Lorenzo; the palaces of the famous Florentine families; Michelangelo’s David.

Venice (Venezia) San Marco, the Grand Canal and the Rialto markets; Also possible: Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Siena

Bologna – Taste of Italy Cooking Day, Piazza Santo Stefano, medieval Towers of the Asinelli and Garisenda

You will need your own transportation to the Pgh. International Airport.  Students will use D2L site to make carpool arrangements if needed.

May 16 – May 19  Roma
Shuttle (coach) transportation to the Hotel InternoUno.
Rome itinerary includes tour guides who are graduate assistants at the University of Rome, a lecture on Dante from Prof. Georgio Mariardi, additional tours of the Coliseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican. One market/cooking class.

May 19 – May 27   Firenze (Florence)
May 27 — 9:45 a.m. train to Florence (ESA #9414 ).  Arrive Firenze Santa Maria Novella Stazione 11:17 a.m.  We will walk from the station to San Lorenzo apartments (about ½ mile).
Meet in Professor Permenter’s apartment for a lecture on the Renaissance and Florence.

Walks through Florence, first with large group, then smaller groups with assigned sights.   Includes Brunelleschi’s Dome, Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore, Ghiberti’s Baptistry Doors, Ponte Vecchio,  Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio.

Accademia di Belle Arti, Galleria dell’Accademia  (Gallery of the Academy) at Piazza San Marco, Via Ricasoli.  Here we will see Michelangelo’s David and many of his unfinished sculptures. Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (Duomo Works Museum), the Church of San Lorenzo, Michelangelo’s library steps. Gallerie degli Uffizi.   Built 1560 as government offices, now houses 4500 art works.  Guided tours.  Tour of Mercato Centrale and cooking classes in Galeota apartment.

San Lorenzo Apartments, Borgo San Lorenzo 13, Florence (Firenze).  Nights of Mar. 11, 12, and 13.  Students will have separate telephones in apartments.  (Contact is Gabriella 055 290641 at her home.  Please use only in an emergency, as this is not a hotel.) 

While in Firenze  Tours are available for reservation at the tourist office down the street from the apartment.  Depending on the cost and your interests, you can choose from bus trips to wineries, Lucca, Pisa, etc., or take the train in small groups to Lucca, Siena, or San Giamignano.  The least expensive and shortest time away is the Chianti wine tour, which gives you a look at the Tuscan countryside (with wine tasting and snacks).

Notify Dr. Permenter about your plans before you leave if you choose to take a bus or train trip out of Florence.

Venezia (Venice)
One overnight to Venice while in Florence. Date TBA.  Tours to St. Mark’s, Doge Palace, Rialto Bridge.
