“Site-specific art” is art that can exist only in one place. The sculptor James Turrell has been working on the Roden Crater project in Arizona since 1979, essentially carving out a massive, personal celestial viewing platform. The artwork could only exist in that one place. It cannot be transported to a museum like a painting by Picasso might be.(see a brief explanation of Turrell’s work here: <http://jamesturrell.com/>). Italy has some of the most amazing graffiti in the world, perhaps helped by differing attitudes toward private property and public space, or maybe Italians just support artists whole lot, especially younger ones.

Above are a few photos of site-specific graffiti. The artist in the first photo used the knot holes in the wood door panels for the mouths of the boy and the cat-man (?) and the keyhole the boy is reaching for is the actual keyhole of this door. The intentions of the artist whose image is on the right are a bit more obvious in its use  of the specific, necessary environment in which to create the art, using a street drain to recreate the undersea diving helmet.Keep your eye open for interesting graffiti as we travel. Your vigilance will be rewarded.
