The Underlying Truth

If someone would ask me what my favorite part of the trip was, I am not sure I could fully answer that question.  There were many parts of this trip that showed me what type of person I am, and what type of person I want to be.  One of the main things about this trip is that I did not know a lot of students on the trip, and many of them have inspired me to reveal certain aspects of myself that I usually would not.  There was one part of the trip that I would say felt very emotional for me.  One of the reasons I wanted to go on this trip was for religious aspects because I personally love learning about the church and its development.  When I went to see Dante’s church, there was something about sitting there and seeing how old everything was, knowing that many people have sat in the same sit that made me feel something.  I am sure others might feel the same way I do, but there are just certain moments in life where you feel that something has come over you and there is that inspiration there for you to let your creativity flow and for your emotions to be released, well I had this happen to me in Dante’s church. Title: No Excuses When I struggled to breathe, you weren’t there, When I fought to save myself, you weren’t there, When I fell to the bottom, you weren’t there, When I couldn’t escape, you weren’t there, When no onr heard me, you weren’t there listening, When I broke myself down, you didn’t fix me, When I need you most, you weren’t there, When I struggled to breathe, there was air, When I fought to save myself, the tools were there When I feel to the bottom, I did not see the ladder, When I couldn’t escape, the gate was unlocked, When no one heard me, you knew I needed to listen to myself, When I broke myself down, I had control to put myself togther, When I needed you most, you were there, You saved me.

Things I saw Round 2…KYakich

There is so much to see in Italy that it is impossible to capture all of it. A picture does not do anything justice because the creations I was able to see with my naked eye and the small details that come along with all of the different pieces of artwork, are not the same in just a picture.  Both top pictures are from the winery.  Here we learned about the Chianti wine and the history behind it.  Wine culturally is something that is very important to Italians, and how the wine is made.  For this specific winery, harvesting had to be done by hand.  In 1842 the family turned the old dungeons into the cellar where the wine is held in barrels.  They do all of the harvesting and hand picking in 25 days!  One of the main things that I found interesting was that our taste buds can change constantly as to what we prefer and do not prefer, meaning that in some point in our lives we may like a sweeter wine, but years later we could prefer a dryer wine.

The Outside

Italy is such an amazing place and it is more than I ever could have imagined. I have been learning about these amazing historical landmarks for the last 3 years in my classes as well as when I was a child and from high school. These landmarks that we have seen have showed me how the different eras have transformed and what made them so different from one another.  Anyone can study pictures online, but physically being able to see the detailed difference between the sculptures and the paintings has been incredible to help visualize what message the authors were trying to send. Another reason why this trip has been so inspirational to me is the religious aspects that come along with a lot if the different eras and how the church has played a large role. I find it interesting how the church has switched from different religions back and forth depending on who was ruling at the time and the views and rules that they had for the people. Some of the religious works have absolutely taken my breath away being able to see something that is not only educational for myself, but always very personal when it comes to my religious views. These religious artworks are informative and important to the different time periods but they also mean me to me than just a historical landmark or piece of art. They help represent who I am and what I have been believing and learning about for most of my life.

Things I Saw…KYakich

These are some of the things I have seen while in Italy thus far. The top picture is homemade tortellini. My second drawing in the bottom left is a picture of a window I was sitting next to for a group dinner at Gianninos. My last picture in the bottom right is my perception of a classroom at the University of Rome. Enjoy!
